March 2025 Newsletter – Women’s History Month and Moving Forward Together!

I’d like to think that long gone are the days that being a woman in a male dominated space meant it was you against the other woman. Or that embodying the assertive, get shit done, natural leadership -ness that are cherished in a male colleague meant another less savory set of labels for that woman. Though I’m a hopeful human, I’ve also been through enough of failing forwards across various spaces, that these days, I prefer to think realistically, first.

We are many years past March 8, 1857, the day marking the beginning of Women’s Month and where women notably banded together to protest harsh working conditions and inequitable earnings, educational and job/compensation opportunities. The reality, almost 170 years later, even amidst reputable research such as McKinseyConsulting’s that companies with gender diverse executive teams were 25% MORE likely to have above average profitability, while companies with more than 30% female executives were more likely to outperform companies that don’t, STILL doesn’t translate into what you’d conclude in the building of said companies with respect to the organizational chart or comp. That’s the reality.  Another reality is there are PLENTY of rad, bright folks out there doing big things and looking for their kind to build community with and build more amazing things, together. Go find them. And do the work you enjoy with people you enjoy rocking with, WHILE hitting those metrics and making money.

This month’s newsletter is dedicated to women and our allies in embracing growing forward, together. It’s possible.  Let’s do this thing!

We are here for you, always in all ways.

OUR PEOPLE SPOTLIGHT - AQUILIUS INNOVATION HUB & VENTURES

This month we’re spotlighting Aquillius, located in San Diego led by MyPhuong Le, PhD, and Leah Villegas, PhD, an organization whose mission is to improve human health and create a healthier planet through their Innovation Hub (a life science, medtech and technology innovation hub dedicated to rapidly developing, testing, prototyping and manufacturing new technologies by fostering collaboration between the startup community, industry, government, and academia) and Aquillius Ventures’, a $50M Fund (pre-seed and seed rounds), focused on MedTech and Life Sciences startups that positively impact Women, Children, and the Elderly. Let us know if you would like the pitch deck or an intro to this cohort walking the walk helping future women entrepreneurs succeed sooner.

Galentine’s Day, hosted by Aquillius - a celebration of trailblazing female founders, highlighted dynamic women entrepreneurs making waves in their industries. We celebrated our inspiring journeys, connected with fellow change makers and bold entrepreneurs so that we are paving the way for more women-led innovation!  Some of the pain points and insights fellow panelists on the “Her Vision, HerVenture: Women Founders on Innovation” panel shared included the common struggle faced re: capital access and how to overcome it (see above women centric capital funds and grants), stock your coffers especially when you don’t need it!, don’t wait to start until it’s perfect (because it never is!), and when attracting outside capital – do not give away too much too soon.

Our CEO, Jessica (pictured in the center), participated in the panel, sharing her insights on capital access and strategies to overcome related challenges.
